HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball team closed out its 2026 regular‑season schedule with a dominant offensive showing Monday, hitting seven home runs across in sweep of Surry Community College at Stanford Park.
The Red Hawks won 10-1 and 12-2 against the Knights, delivering one of their most explosive days at the plate this season.
Catawba Valley 10, Surry 1 (game one)
The Red Hawks wasted no time in setting the tone in Monday's doubleheader, scoring 10 runs on 11 hits while belting five home runs in a five-inning victory.
Catawba Valley's Reagan Garrett opened the scoring with a three‑run homer and finished 1-for-1 with three RBIs. Finlee Young went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double and an RBI, and Samantha Gregory added a two‑run shot as part of a 1-for-3 performance for CVCC.
The Red Hawks' Paige Ford delivered one of the day's biggest performances, going 2-for-3 with two home runs and two RBIs. Gionna Merhtens went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, while Genesis Lebron and Andi Stroud each added hits.
CVCC also received strong pitching from Garrett, who opened with a scoreless inning, allowing one hit. Ford followed with three innings of one‑run ball, striking out one. Emily McKie closed the game with a perfect fifth inning.
Catawba Valley 12, Surry 2 (game two)
The Red Hawks continued their power surge in Game 2, hitting two more home runs and scoring 12 runs on eight hits to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Ford capped her standout day by going 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, giving her three homers across the two games played. Gregory added her second homer of the day — a three‑run shot — and finished 1-for-3 with three RBIs.
Young went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Catawba Valley, while Alexa Moya, Courtney Dean, Genesis Lebron, Kadance Ward and Merhtens all contributed offensively. Merhtens also stole a base.
Freshman pitcher Mallory Hines earned the win in the circle for CVCC, allowing one run on five hits over four innings. McKie pitched the fifth, giving up one run.
The Red Hawks combined for 22 runs, 19 hits and seven home runs across the two games.
The Catawba Valley Community College softball team now awaits its fate for the Region 10 tournament, which takes place April 30 through May 2 at Big League Camp in Marion, N.C.
