HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team defeated the Montreat JV team 87-72 at the Tarlton Complex on Thursday night in head coach Nikky McCaskill's debut.

J'Nya Wiley led the Red Hawks (1-0) with 20 points, while Jordyn Adams added 18 points in the victory.

Leading 16-15 after the first quarter, CVCC extended its lead to 40-34 by the halftime break powered behind Wiley's 14 first-half points.

The Red Hawks continued to push their lead in the second half and capitalized on outrebounding the Cavaliers 64-51 and causing 19 turnovers to pull away for the 15-point non-conference win.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to the court on Sunday for a 5 p.m. contest against the Belmont Abbey Developmental team. Admission is $10, and CVCC students, faculty and staff are admitted free wth ID.
