Baseball Sweeps Wake Tech Behind Explosive Offensive Weekend

HICKORY, N.C. — Catawba Valley Community College swept Wake Tech in a three‑game series over the weekend, using timely power, big innings and consistent production throughout the lineup to outscore the Eagles 32–17. Sylas Mills led the charge with four home runs across the series, including multi‑homer performances in Games 2 and 3.


Game 1: Robinson's Late Homer Lifts Red Hawks, 8–7

Catawba Valley opened the series with an 8–7 comeback win Friday. The Red Hawks trailed 5–2 in the sixth before Drew Berenyi hit a two‑run homer to center, followed immediately by a two‑run shot from Jacob Krebs to right, cutting the deficit to one.

CVCC moved in front in the seventh when Pierce Bouwman singled in two runs and Sylas Mills was hit by a pitch to drive in another, but Wake Tech tied the game in the eighth.

With the score even in the bottom half, Alex Robinson delivered the decisive blow, sending a solo home run to center to give CVCC the lead for good.

Cooper Bliss earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief. Starter Cole Bowie allowed two earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Bouwman finished 3-for-4, and the Red Hawks turned two double plays.


Game 2: Mills Homers Twice as CVCC Rolls to 11–3 Win

The Red Hawks took Game 2 with an 11–3 victory Saturday, powered by a seven‑run fifth inning and another standout performance from Mills, who hit solo home runs in both the fifth and seventh innings.

In the fifth, CVCC broke the game open with home runs from Mills and Krebs, an RBI double by Matthew Perez, a sacrifice fly from Brady Byler and two more runs scored via a hit batter and a bases‑loaded walk.

Brody Taylor tied the game earlier with a solo home run in the third and finished 3-for-4. The Red Hawks added two runs in the seventh, including Mills' second homer of the day.

Chase Arrington earned the win with two scoreless innings. Tony Lopez struck out six over five innings in the start. CVCC totaled 12 hits and turned two double plays.


Game 3: Mills Drives in Seven in 17–7 Run‑Rule Victory

Catawba Valley capped the sweep with a 17–7 run‑rule win behind Mills' seven RBIs and two more home runs. Wake Tech led 5–1 after a four‑run third inning, but CVCC responded in the fourth with Lucas Dawson's solo home run and a combination of walks, an error and productive contact to tie the game.

The Red Hawks took control in the fifth, scoring six runs on six hits, highlighted by Mills' three‑run homer to right. Mills added another three‑run homer an inning later, while Broden Thompson and Cole Meadows each added RBI singles.

Braiden Moore earned the win, allowing two runs over four innings with six strikeouts. Meadows and Krebs finished with three hits each, Dawson added two, and Berenyi drew three walks as the Red Hawks totaled 13.
