HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team swept a three-game home conference series against Southwest Virginia on Saturday and Sunday, outscoring the Flying Eagles 29–4 during the set.
The Red Hawks (11-7, 6-0 in Region 10) opened the series on Saturday with a 7–3 win powered by home runs from Alex Robinson and Nathan Bunch and a six‑inning gem from Cole Bowie, who struck out nine and allowed just one unearned run. Pierce Bouwman added a two‑run double in the seventh to help secure the victory.
In the nightcap, CVCC rolled to an 11–0, five‑inning shutout. Isaiah McDowell drove in six runs, including a grand slam in the fourth inning, while Bouwman added a three‑run homer as part of a five‑run second inning. Lane Essary and Cooper Bliss combined on the mound to hold Southwest Virginia to three hits.
The Red Hawks completed the sweep on Sunday with another outstanding offensive performance, winning 11–1 in six innings. Bouwman stayed hot with three hits, a home run and three RBIs, while Jacob Krebs added a two‑run home run of his own. CVCC piled up 17 hits, and pitcher Tony Lopez earned the win with five strong innings, allowing just one unearned run.
Across the series, Catawba Valley's offense totaled 33 hits, including seven home runs, while its pitching staff held Southwest Virginia to nine hits and one earned run over 20 innings.
The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team continues its 10-game home stretch with another home contest Tuesday against Surry. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.
