No. 23 Red Hawks take Region 10 series against Wake Tech

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. — The 23rd-ranked Catawba Valley Community College baseball team secured a Region 10 series victory over Wake Technical Community College, taking two-of-three games at Ting Park on Saturday and Sunday.

The Red Hawks (21-17, 13-6 in Region 10) opened the series with a 9-6 victory before rolling to an emphatic 18-4 win in the nightcap of Saturday's doubleheader before Wake Tech edged out a narrow 5-4 win in Sunday's finale.

Catawba Valley 9, Wake Tech 6 (game one)

Sylas Mills drove in five runs on a three-hit day that included a two-run double and a home run to help the Red Hawks rally past the Eagles in game one Saturday.

CVCC pitcher Chase Arrington earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs over six innings, striking out four. The Red Hawks bullpen preserved the lead late with Drew Bryant shutting the door in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

Catawba Valley capitalized on Wake Tech errors and timely extra-base hits, including home runs from Mills and Brody Taylor, while Jacob Krebs added a key RBI double.

Catawba Valley 18, Wake Tech 4 (game two)

The Red Hawk offense erupted in Saturday's finale, scoring 18 runs on 15 hits to complete the doubleheader sweep against Wake Tech.

Mills continued his dominant day, going a perfect 4-for-4, scoring four runs and driving in three. Jacob Krebs chipped in three hits and two RBIs, while Alex Robinson, Josh Meadows and Matthew Perez each drove in two runs.

On the mound, Riley Campbell steadied the game with 3.1 scoreless innings in relief, striking out six to earn the win.

Catawba Valley jumped out early, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings and never looked back.

Wake Tech 5, Red Hawks 4 (game three - 10 innings)

The Eagles tied the game on a two-out double in the ninth inning before edging the Red Hawks in extra innings during Sunday's three-game series finale.

Pierce Bouwman led Catawba Valley offensively, going 2-for-6 with a home run and two RBIs, while Isaiah McDowell added an RBI and stole a base. CVCC pitchers kept the game tight all afternoon, highlighted by Tony Lopez, who allowed two earned runs over 5.1 innings with seven strikeouts.

Despite the setback, the Red Hawks showed resilience, forcing Wake Tech to extra innings before the visitors scored twice in the 10th.

The 23rd-ranked Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a road contest at Cleveland Community College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Shelby.
