HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team erupted for 50 runs on 50 hits, sweeping a three-game series against Southwest Virginia on Saturday and Sunday at Henkel‑Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.
The Red Hawks outscored the Flying Eagles 50-13 over the three games, combining explosive offense with efficient pitching to secure 14-5 and 18-0 victories on Saturday before closing the series with an 18-8 win on Sunday.
During the series, the Red Hawks' Sylas Mills and Pierce Bouwman broke the Catawba Valley career home run record.
Catawba Valley 14, Southwest Virginia 5 (game one)
Catawba Valley opened the series on Saturday with a nine-run victory over the Flying Eagles. The Red Hawks finished the game with 15 hits, including home runs from Mills, Alex Robinson and Broden Thompson.
Thompson drove in a game-high four runs, while Mills added three RBIs, and Pierce Bouwman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Chase Arrington earned the win on the mound, striking out six over five innings, and Drew Bryant tossed four scoreless innings in relief.
Catawba Valley 18, Southwest Virginia 0 (game two)
CVCC rolled to an 18–0, five-inning shutout in Saturday's nightcap. Cole Bowie was dominant on the mound for the Red Hawks, retiring nine of the 17 batters he faced via strikeout while allowing just two hits.
Offensively, Bouwman delivered a standout performance, going 4-for-5 with three home runs and driving in seven runs. Brady Byler added five RBIs, and the Red Hawks totaled 18 hits while holding Southwest Virginia hitless until the fourth inning.
Catawba Valley 18, Southwest Virginia 8 (game three)
The Red Hawks completed the sweep with an 10-run win on Sunday, scoring in six different innings and taking advantage of consistent pressure on the bases.
Jacob Krebs and Pierce Bouwman each went 4-for-5, combining for eight runs and six RBIs. Sylas Mills drove in three runs, and Isaiah McDowell added two RBIs while scoring three times.
On the mound, Alex Robinson picked up the win, while the Red Hawks' bullpen combined to limit damage late and preserve the victory.
The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a home conference contest against Cleveland Community College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Henkel-Alley Field.
