HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team powered its way to a Region 10 series victory this past weekend, taking two of three games from Louisburg College at Henkel-Alley Field.
The Red Hawks (33-18, 25-7 in Region 10) opened the series with an 11-9 slugfest win on Saturday, fell 8-1 in Sunday's first game and responded with a decisive 6-1 victory in Sunday's rubber match to secure the series.
Red Hawks 11, Hurricanes 9 (game one)
Catawba Valley's offense erupted early, tallying eight runs in the first two innings en route to victory in the series opener on Saturday.
Sylas Mills led the charge for CVCC with a 3-for-3 performance, including a home run, double and two RBI. Brody Taylor, Alex Robinson and Isaiah McDowell each homered as the Red Hawks launched four long balls in the win. Jacob Krebs added a two-run double and finished with three RBI.
On the mound, Red Hawk starting pitcher Drew Bryant (3-1) steadied the game with 2.2 innings of relief before Cooper Bliss closed the door in the ninth for his first save.
Louisburg 8, Red Hawks 1 (game two)
The Red Hawks were held to six hits in the first game on Sunday against the Hurricanes. Taylor provided the lone run with a solo home run — his second of the day.
Starter Cole Bowie (3-5) kept CVCC within reach through five innings, but Louisburg capitalized late to even the series.
Red Hawks 6, Hurricanes 1 (game three)
Catawba Valley responded emphatically in Sunday's finale, controlling the game from the first pitch.
Lane Essary improved to 4-0 with five strong innings, striking out six while allowing just one run. Bliss followed with two scoreless frames to secure Red Hawks' win.
Taylor continued his standout weekend with another home run — his third of the series — while Pierce Bouwman drove in a run and reached base three times. Matthew Perez scored twice, helping CVCC capitalize on eight walks issued by Louisburg pitching.
The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action Wednesday for its final regular-season road game of the season against Cleveland Community College. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Shelby, N.C.
