HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team opened the home portion of its 2025-26 season on Tuesday with a 142-85 victory against the Lees McRae developmental team at the Tarlton Complex.
The 142 total points are the second-most in a game in program history.
K.J. Burke led the Red Hawks (2-0) with 16 points, including 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Joseph Durant added 15 points, and TJay Mills and Caden Caskey tallied 13 points each.
A total of seven Red Hawk players reached double figures in scoring, including Javier Tinnin (10 points), Josh Moore (10) and Trent Floystad (10).
The Red Hawks pulled out to a 67-44 lead at halftime behind 14 points from Burke, 11 from Mills and 10 from Tinnin.
Catawba Valley exploded for 75 points in the second half — the second most in a half in a game in program history — to seal its second victory of the season.
The CVCC men's basketball team returns to action this Friday and Saturday for the annual CVCC Classic.
Games on Friday include Caldwell CC&TI against Roane State (Tenn.) at 6 p.m. followed by Catawba Valley against Gaston at 8 p.m.
Saturday games for the CVCC Classic feature Gaston College taking on Roane State at 1 p.m. The Red Hawks close out the Classic with a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday against Caldwell.
